Jerónimo de Estridón
San Jerónimo nació en Dalmacia (actual Croacia). Por encargo del papa Dámaso, empezó a traducir la Biblia del griego y del hebreo al latín, versión denominada «Vulgata» (por entonces el latín era la lengua del pueblo), el año 382.
Decidió, entonces, instalarse en Belén para perfeccionar su dominio del hebreo. Incluso se dio el lujo de corregir versiones anteriores de traducciones del Nuevo Testamento o de ciertos trozos del Antiguo Testamento, tratando de establecer un rigor en la versión traducida.
Falleció el 30 de septiembre del año 420 en Belén, Israel.
En su honor la Federación Internacional de Traductores (FIT) instauró en 1991 la celebración del Día Internacional del Traductor.
